I walked past the Marriott on Kanapali along the "boardwalk" by the beach and was able to see for free the entire luau show. Bring a snack with you so you don't get hungry while the paying customers chow down on the buffet. The show is really entertaining, especially near the end when the fire torches are tossed and twirled. The emcee has some corny jokes and brings a few paying customers on stage. For example, when several dancers in grass skirts circled a volunteer on stage while shaking their hips vigorously the emcee called it a "Hawaiian car wash." It was well worth standing nearby for an unobstructed view of this fun show for free. Bring a light weight folding chair if you want to be more comfortable. Enjoy!
